The Great Prize of Broken Trust in Marriage
“It is only a foolish man that digs a hole with his toe in search of a cricket, while carrying the elephant, he killed during hunting, on his head,” says a Nigerian proverb.
The broken trust in marriage story that I’m about to share with you, in this article, fully illustrates this proverb.
The broken trust in marriage story involved the wife of a man named Jite, short form for Onajite, and a certain strange wealthy man.
Jite, a graduate of Banking and Finance, was a teller at a commercial bank, before he lost his job at the bank, due to the global economic meltdown.
His misfortune took place a few months after he wedded his wife in the church, hence he was badly devastated.
In order to provide for himself and his new young wife, in the absence of the bank job, he started moving around town in search of any job that could put food on the table, for him and his wife.
The first job he secured in that process was that of a security guard at a stadium.
He got the job with the help of his mother’s elder brother, who was the manager of the stadium.
The job required him to resume at 6 AM and close at 6 PM.
The job was a bit strenuous, but he didn’t bother so much about it because the stadium was a walking distance from his family house, where he lived with his wife.
Unfortunately, again, he lost the job a few months after on the grounds that his uncle employed him without the permission of the management of the stadium.
That forcefully threw him back to the saturated labour market, where he continued his search for another job.
The search for any kind of job, which usually forced him out of the house as early as 5 AM, usually took him from one corner of the town to another, especially to building construction sites.
“I woke up late one morning, at about 7:37 AM,” Jite recalled, “because my wife was not at home to wake me and also because I cried over my poor condition all through the previous night.
“Ironically, that was the day I found my first job at a building construction site as a helper to a mason.
“It was simply a happy day for me, because I started the day on a sad note, but ended it in a happy mood.”
As Jite was cooking what to eat that evening, his phone rang, displaying an ‘unknown number’ on its screen.
“I was like a lottery winner when the caller introduced himself as Emmanuel, a former colleague of mine at the bank where both of us lost our jobs about two years before that day.”
While the two gentlemen were discussing on the phone, Emmanuel invited Jite to come quickly to a hotel in the reserved area of the town, and Jite honoured the invitation without hesitation.
“Emmanuel was discussing with somebody at the lobby of the hotel when I arrived there, after which he led me to his tastefully furnished office on the ground floor of the hotel building.
“After telling me the story of how he secured the job as the manager of the exquisite hotel, he ordered one of his waitresses to bring me a chilled bottle of my favourite beer and some fillets of fried turkey.
“While I was doing justice to the drink and meat, he then asked after his wife, and I told him she left home some days before to stay with one of her aunts for a short period, due to my job struggles and financial hardship.”
“He followed that question up by asking to know the last time we spoke and where she told me she was at the time we spoke.
“I had no idea why he was asking me those prying questions until he disclosed, to me, that a certain man brought a woman that looked like her to the hotel, some days before that day, and lodged her in one of the executive suites at the hotel.
“He also told me that the strange man usually came there every evening to see her, before leaving for home at 10. PM.
“As at the time we were having that discussion, the man and the woman were at the executive suite upstairs.
What a hard way for a struggling man to discover his wife’s clandestine affair!
“At the end of that question-and-answer session, Emmanuel and I started making plans on how I could confirm whether the woman in question was my wife or not, and what we would do if our suspicion became a reality.
“In furtherance to that plan, I had to leave Emmanuel’s office to return to the lobby, where I sat in a position that would enable me to see anybody who would be coming down from the upper floor of the hotel.
“Not long after that, I sighted a strange man holding my wife by the waist as they walked down the stairs.
“I had always heard about betrayal of trust in relationships and broken trust in marriage, but I had never experienced it, until that day.
“Immediately I sighted my wife and her lover, I jumped on my feet, pulled out my phone from my pocket, and started taking photographs of the cheating spouses.
“When the intruder noticed that I was taking photographs of him and the woman with him, he became very furious, threatening to take legal action against me for violating his privacy and for embarrassing him in public.
“But as soon as he discovered that I was the legal husband of the woman he had been sleeping with, for God knows when he became cold and speechless.
“Thad did not stop me from grabbing him by the collar of his designer shirt with one hand and gripping my wife my wife’s hand with the other of my hand, as was earlier suggested by Emmanuel.
“Emmanuel arrived at the scene, in the heat of that misunderstanding, and invited us; the man, my wife, and I to his office, for settlement.
“For fear of having the story and his photographs published online or elsewhere, the man went on his knees in Emmanuel’s office and started begging me for forgiveness.
“In addition to that, he voluntarily offered me a compensation of US$5,000 (five thousand United States dollars), provided I kept the incident private.
“I rejected his offer with concealed excitement and insisted that he should increase it to US$10,000 (ten thousand United States dollars).
“After much haggling, Emmanuel pleaded with me to accept US$7,000, which I did.
“Following my acceptance, the man went to his car, at the hotel’s parking lot, and brought the agreed amount in new crispy notes.
“Before I finally left him off the hook, I demanded a signed statement of what transpired between both of us that warranted him to offer me the said amount, so that he would not be able to make trouble with me in the future, and he did exactly that.”
After settling Emmanuel with part of the compensation money, Jite used the rest to finance his relocation to Canada after the marital betrayal by his wife.
As at the time of publishing this story, Jite was still resident in Canada, a luxury he could not afford when he was a banker.
Unlike the randy wealthy man, Jite did not grant his wife infidelity forgiveness.
“I left her to suffer the infidelity consequences she caused for herself,” disclosed Jite, “because she was an unremorseful online infidelity addict.”
Betrayal of trust in relationships and broken trust in marriage seem to be on the increase these days.
What do you think we can do about it?
I think we should, among other things, put our feet down to stamp it out, so that peace and sanity can return to the embattled marriage institution.
In other words, we need to condemn and prevent the betrayal of trust in relationships and broken trust in marriage from destroying us.
Those who have brains, let them learn.
