Mr. Johnson returned from work one early morning, after a night-shift duty at his place of work on Eric Moore Road, Surulere, Lagos, and headed straight to his bedroom to have a nice sleep before looking for what to eat.

On getting to his bedroom, he found his wife fast asleep, with the bed-sheet pulled over her body, including her head.

Instead of going to sleep as earlier planned, he changed his mind and decided to make love to her first.  Without wasting time, he crawled under the bed-sheet and proceeded to make love to her before having his planned sleep.

After he had satisfied himself with some hot rounds of sex, he became hungrier than before, and needed something to eat, very fast.  As he hurried downstairs, on his way to the kitchen, he was startled to meet his wife dropping his breakfast of toast bread and custard at the dining table.

“How did you get here so fast, darling?” he asked.  “When did you become a spirit?”

“How do you mean?” replied his wife inquisitively.

“Were you not the one I had just finished making love to upstairs?” he asked with a smile.

“Oh, my God,” gasped his wife.  “It wasn’t me.  That’s my mother up there.  She came over yesterday evening, soon after you left for work.

She had complained of having a biting-headache, and I asked her to go and lie down there for a while on your bed, hoping that you won’t come back so early this morning.   You mean you made love to my mother?  Oh, my God, what a nonsense!”

With that rage, the angry and disappointed housewife rushed upstairs to ascertain whether what she had heard was a lie or a fact.

“Mum,” she barked as she got upstairs fuming.  “What have I just heard?”

“What did you hear, my dear?” retorted her mother.

“Mum, why did you answer my question with another question instead of giving me a straight-forward answer?  I said, “What have you just done?”

“What?  When? Where?” asked her mother grumpily.”

“Okay, now listen.  My husband told me he had just finished making love to you.   Why did you allow that to happen in my matrimonial home?   Does my father no longer satisfy you?

“Is that why you’re shouting at me?  Have you forgotten that I’m your mother, no matter what you must have heard?  No matter what must have happened, you have to talk to me with some amount of civility; at least, I’m still your mother.”

Okay, I’m sorry about that.   But, mum, why did you chose to disgrace me this way?   Assuming he raped you, wouldn’t it have made sense if you had raised an alarm for me to come to your rescue, when you know full well that I’m around?”

“Why should I?” defended the visiting mother-in-law.  “Don’t you know that your husband and I have not been in talking terms for some time now?   We have not been talking to each other for months now, and I wasn’t ready to be the first to break the long silence between us.  That was why I didn’t talk to him all through the time he did what he did, which he told you about”
